This recipe is straightforward and perfect for both seasoned bakers and beginners alike. With just a few ingredients, you can create a batch of donuts that are light, airy, and irresistibly delicious. Whether enjoyed plain or with a variety of toppings, these classic glazed donuts are sure to please any crowd and make for a wonderful addition to brunch or a special treat for your loved ones.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Oil for frying
  • For the glaze:
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use.
  2. Add 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture. Whisk until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the water, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. Using a donut cutter, cut out the donuts and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  6. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the donuts, a few at a time, and fry until they’re golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove them and place them on a cooling rack.
  7. For the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth. Dip the warm donuts into the glaze, allowing the excess to drip off, and place them back on the cooling rack to set.

Extra Tips:

Make certain your oil is at the correct temperature before frying the donuts to guarantee they cook evenly. You can also flavor the glaze with a bit of cinnamon or almond extract for a unique twist. For added texture, consider rolling the glazed donuts in sprinkles or chopped nuts while the glaze is still wet.

Enjoy your freshly made classic glazed donuts with a cup of coffee or tea for the perfect treat!
